Learning through the Arts: Harriet Tubman!

On this day, AAMP's youngest visitors will have a chance to make art inspired by the remarkable legacy of Harriet Tubman. Through our “Follow the Drinking Gourd” Activity—named for the historic song “Follow the Drinking Gourd”—participants will learn how such songs, and other coded language, symbols and collaborators, helped Harriet Tubman lead many people to freedom during the era of 19th Century slavery in the U.S.

Participants will learn:
  • to make their own felt map using felt shapes inspired by the words and symbols in the song
  • about the geographical journey that Harriet Tubman had to take to free enslaved Africans
  • about the many ways free and enslaved Africans in America communicated during their journeys to freedom
Led by visual artist Jihan Thomas of Original Seed Expressions, this drop-in hands-on workshop is the perfect complement to a visit to AAMP's galleries.

Free admission to the African American Museum in Philadelphia is made possible thorugh Wawa and the National Constitution Center as part of Wawa's Community Day Honoring Black History Month.

Advanced registration is strongly recommended; workshop capacity is limited to 25 people of 6 family groups. When on-site we ask that visitors age 3+ present with a face mask upon arrival; however if you happen to forget, 1 single-use face mask will be available upon entry.
