Learning through the Arts: Printmaking with Gilberto Wilson
Gilberto Wilson is a Caribbean printmaking artist local to Philadelphia. Originally born in Aruba, Gilberto immigrated to the U.S. in 1968 at the height of some of the country’s most forceful historical movements and happenings, including the Vietnam War, Anti-War protests, riots in Washington, Civil Rights Act of 1968, the rise of the Black Panther party, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, Olympic athletes raising their fists in a Black Power salute, and more. The tumultuous context of the Black Arts movement, modernity, and progressivism in the 60’s and 70’s was the background to Wilson’s youth and inspired his inclusive artistic practice through today.
