More on Juneteenth: Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, dating back to June 19, 1865. The Freedom March began on January 1, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation; and ended when Union soldiers -- including many African Americans from the Philadelphia area -- read General Order #3 to enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, thereby enforcing President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and emancipating the last enslaved Africans in Texas on June 19th, 1865. This was two years, five months, and eighteen days after President Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. The Freedom Day celebration was given the name Juneteenth because USCT’s of the 25th Corps freed all enslaved Africans on Texan plantations in June, between the 13th and the 19th.
